Why is it important for your brand to celebrate Earth Month and how are you celebrating throughout the month?
Handsome Brook Farms believes that “acting Handsomely” is important every day, not just during Earth Month. For us, this means doing the work on our network farms to help our farmers create resilient, healthy ecosystems for our birds. It’s especially exciting this time of year when things are greening up and with warmer weather, we’re able to help the farmers plant trees and shrubs in their pastures to create shade and protection from predators for our birds.
What does your brand do to help create a healthier environment and to treat the planet more respectfully everyday?
Handsome Brook Farms works with our network of small family farms to ensure the pastures where our birds forage are managed in such a way to maintain or improve soil and water quality. This has the added benefit of supporting biodiversity in the pastures, including cover, nectar and pollen for pollinators. That’s a role that Handsome Brook can play to treat the planet more respectfully.
What is one thing you wish everyone knew about organic?
Being a certified organic operation is not just a marketing gimmick! Our organic farms undergo annual on-site independent audits, are subject to surprise inspections and must demonstrate compliance with rigorous standards for environmental health and animal welfare. If you see the USDA Organic seal on a product, you know you can trust it’s complied with the world’s most comprehensive and transparent food, fiber, and personal care standards in the world.
Why is it important for your brand to be organic?
Not only is it the right thing to do, but foods raised using organic production methods are shown to be more nutrient dense, contain no chemical herbicides or pesticides and take into account the welfare of the animals, and the soil and water on which we all depend.
What does organic do to make the planet healthier?
People, animals and the environment all benefit from organic production methods. Reducing the amount of synthetic chemicals in our environment and in our food is very important today. When you purchase an organic product, you know you have helped reduce the chemical load in our food system. You are supporting farmers that are dedicated to producing food, fiber, and personal care products using organic methods. Additionally, a healthy environment mitigates the effects of chaotic weather patterns including droughts and floods, protects water and air quality, while improving biodiversity. Everything works together! Healthy soils, clean water and air lead to healthy people and planet.
How can consumers celebrate Earth Month?
Pay attention to the products you buy. Read labels and when you can, buy organic products. And while you’re at it, plant a tree, walk in the sunshine, breathe the air and listen to the birds. When you appreciate your world, you’re more protective of it!
